Dear Community Members!

With the recent completion of our ten unit Penny Lane Apartment building we look forward to embarking on another home building project in the near future. But as building these homes for local residents would not have been possible without the dedicated support of our amazing community, we are looking to you for your continued support to achieve this goal.

You can read in previous posts about the delighted Penny Lane Apartments tenants at 334 A Avenue, managed by our experienced and hard-working Building Manager, as well as the reluctant goodbye to our Office Manager and Bookkeeper. Fortunately our bookkeeper position has already been filled by an enthusiastic and well qualified community member.

However, we are looking for a qualified individual to take on the office/executive director position.

We are also looking for additional Board members to steer the ship.

At the upcoming AGM 3 Board member positions will be available to be filled. We would encourage any of you who feel a passion to contribute to the creation of affordable and attainable, secure homes for Kaslo residents, to step forward to be nominated for a seat on the KHS Board.

You can purchase your $5 annual membership at Sunnyside, Cornucopia, Eric’s Meat Market, Willow Home Boutique and at the door. You may also eTransfer or Direct Deposit to KSCU maximizer acct#564666 with your name, phone number and email address and ‘membership’ in your message. We would like to thank the above local businesses for hosting our membership boxes.

If you are interested in applying for our paid office/executive director position, please, email info@kaslohousingsociety.org.

If you would like to sit on our Board, and/or join one of our steering committees, please, email info@kaslohousingsociety.org.

If you are generally interested in the housing situation for Kaslo residents and curious about the work of the Kaslo Housing Society, please attend our

Annual General Meeting on

November, 18, 3PM, at the Seniors Hall.

We have invited an energetic speaker who is very knowledgeable about rental housing, BC housing availability, and specifically about the rental housing situation in Kaslo. What could be better and more informative than that?

Join us at the Seniors Hall, Nov. 18! Coffee will be on. Refreshments will be served, and there will be plenty of socializing, and sharing of ideas.  It may just be one of those ideas brought forward by someone like you that might just take wing and set KHS on its path towards the construction of more much needed affordable, attainable, secure homes for Kaslo residents!

We promise to keep the business part of the AGM short.

Our speaker will be informative, and the possibilities are endless.

Erika Cizek – Speaker Bio

Erika has recently completed a Master’s degree in Human Geography at the University of Alberta, where she undertook a two-year research project exploring the ongoing challenges with housing affordability in Kaslo and Nelson. Along with identifying local factors influencing housing, her research also examined the impacts of short-term rentals, the roles of all three levels of government and where community housing organizations like the KHS fit in to this system. Canada is in the midst of a nationwide housing crisis; however, the dominant discourse focuses largely on major centres, while small towns – and the unique factors that influence housing there – are often overlooked. Erika’s research reveals the unique housing challenges faced by communities like Kaslo, and contributes to ensuring that rural places and small towns are given full consideration in the analysis of Canada’s housing challenges.

For those of you who may find it difficult or impossible to attend our AGM in person, we will be providing a reliable zoom link several days before the AGM, so you can join us from the comfort of your home.

We look forward to seeing you there!
